Savonius Wind Turbine

A wind-powered generator (such as a Savonius wind turbine) is a type of renewable energy technology that can help us reduce our dependence on conventional resources like fossil fuels.

To give you a clearer picture of what it is, imagine two halves of a vertically divided cylinder intentionally put together in a misaligned manner – from a top view, the two halves resemble “C” shapes which are joined at the ends to form an “S” shape.

The ends of the “S” shape form the “scoops” which rely on wind drag to make the cylindrical turbine turn along its vertical axis.

For the Savonius wind turbine to generate power, coils of fine wire (linked together in series) are installed on the bottom disc which forms the base of the entire structure. Next, magnets are attached to the underside of the turbine so that when they rotate along with the device, they’ll rapidly pass directly over the fixed coils on the base and subsequently create electromagnetic power.

Of course, you could hook up the turbine to a simple DC motor instead of creating the coil/magnet setup described above. An actual motor would obviously generate more power, so the size of your Savonius wind turbine will depend on your power needs.

This simple wind system has many basic household applications, such as powering safety lights and gate openers.

Bear in mind that a Savonius wind turbine’s focus is more on reliability rather than efficient energy output. That means this kind of wind power system is appropriate for low-power appliances.

Being a vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT), it does have an advantage over horizontal-axis turbines (HAWTs) which need to be manually readjusted according to the direction of the wind.

A Savonius wind turbine is self-starting and will turn no matter which direction the wind is coming from.

All in all, building such a turbine is easy to do and there are plenty of resources out there that offer information on getting this done.
